Peat-as-fuel plays an important role in the energy systems of Finland. The key in the successful utilization of Finland's major indigenous energy resource has been first of all to find alternative and more economical replacements to imported fossil fuels. Finland does not have its own coal, oil, or natural gas resources. However, there are a number of peat deposits in the country. The current level of peat usage exceeds three million tons per annum, which is 4% of the total energy consumption. Nationwide it still is a fairly small portion of total energy consumption; it is of great local importance in creating jobs and providing efficient and economical energy for industry, municipal heat and power plants, and also condensing power plants. This paper discusses how the Finnish peat technology has been utilized also in the USA. Finnish peat specialists have assisted in peat resource surveys in Alaska and Minnesota and have carried out feasibility studies for industry and utilities in Florida, Georgia, Maine, and Minnesota. Peat production demonstrations have been successful in Minnesota and North Carolina.
