Improvements in coal tar processing techniques

When coal tar is processed with the return of all press drainings to the single-column apparatus, one way of reducing the naphthalene losses in the wash-oil fraction is to redistill the latter in a fore-column. The use of a fore-column makes it possible to produce a highly concentrated (85 to 89%) naphthalene fraction, recover more naphthalene from the feedstock and raise the quality of the pressed naphthalene. A regression equation has been derived for the naphthalene content of the wash-oil fraction as a function of that of the naphthalene fraction and the live steam input to the fore-column.
