Release of SO/sub 2/ during formaldehyde measurement with impingers containing sodium bisulfite

Measurement of ambient concentrations of formaldehyde (HCHO) by a modified version of NIOSH methodology involves the use of impingers that contain sodium bisulfite (NaHSO/sub 3/) in solution. After air passes through the impingers and the solution is developed with chromatropic acid and measured spectrophotometrically, HCHO levels can be determined by comparison with a standard HCHO concentration curve. During a clinical investigation of the lung function effects of HCHO, routine monitoring of background pollutants in our environmental chamber revealed spikes of SO/sub 2/ during the intermittent sampling period for HCHO. A simple alternative methodology is discussed.
