Anisotropic surface diffusion of CO on Ni(110)

Anisotropic surface diffusion of CO on Ni(110) has been studied using the newly developed technique of optical second-harmonic diffraction from a laser-induced CO monolayer grating. Two distinct orthogonal diffusion channels, along (1{bar 1}0) and (001), were found. The measured diffusion coefficients yield the diffusion activation energies {ital E}{sub {ital d}}(1{bar 1}0)=1.1{plus minus}0.2 kcal/mol and {ital E}{sub {ital d}}(001)=3.1{plus minus}0.4 kcal/mol and the preexponential factors {ital D}{sub 0}(1{bar 1}0)=(3.8{plus minus}2.0){times}10{sup {minus}9} cm{sup 2}/sec and {ital D}{sub 0}(001)=(4.8{plus minus}4.4){times}10{sup {minus}6} cm{sup 2}/sec. The anisotropy in the surface diffusion appears to cross over at {ital T}{similar to}160 K.
