The chapter summarizes information on U.S. coal resources, describes physical coal cleaning technology, and discusses the potential for desulfurizing U.S. coals by physical techniques. It presents the costs of physical coal cleaning, summarizes the amounts of cleaned coals which can comply with different emission standards, and discusses the effects of coal sulfur variability on determining compliance coal properties. Finally, sample calculations are given for estimating the use of a given coal for compliance with various SO/sub 2/ emission regulations.
