In 1984-1985, the California Indoor Air Quality Program undertook a state-wide survey of formaldehyde concentrations and health effects in mobile homes. Week-long integrated formaldehyde concentrations were measured using passive samplers in summer and winter while the residents carried out their normal activities. Information on demographic variables, smoking behavior, time spent at home, chronic respiratory/allergy illnesses, and acute health problems were obtained for more than 1,000 individuals during the sampling periods. Formaldehyde concentrations measured from under the limit of detection (0.01 ppm) to 0.46 ppm. Formaldehyde exposure was estimated for each individual by multiplying the concentration measured in his/her home and the time he/she spent at home. Health effects were found to be significantly associated with formaldehyde exposure after the effects of age, sex, smoking status, and chronic conditions were controlled using a logistic regression procedure.
