With the advent of the personal computers, geologists have become increasingly involved in computer programming and application. Unfortunately, the large bulk of computer software are still generated by non-scientists who do not understand the various needs for real-world geologic interpretation. This paper briefly discusses the history of PC development, its ramifications on the geologic community, and where this technology is leading or should lead. It makes recommendations on improving the geologists understanding of computer applications, including establishing forums, peer review of quantitative methodology, public meetings between geologists and other individuals to encourage technology transfers, etc.
