Catalytic hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons

The paper describes progress in unraveling reaction mechanisms and in developing useful catalysts. The organometallic catalyst, eta/sup 3/-C/sub 3/H/sub 5/Co)P(OCH))/sub 3/, catalyzed the hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons at 20/sup 0/C. This hydrogenation was complete and no cyclohexene products were detected. Other coordination catalyst systems have been developed. Their use may be dictated only by chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity since there is no basis to presume that only one reaction mechanism will prevail for coordination catalysts of arene hydrogenation. 38 references, 1 figure, 1 table.
