Experimental measurement and analysis of magnetic fields in the BYU Topolotron device

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5801561
A system of multiple-coil magnetic sensors was utilized to map the magnetic flux during plasma discharges in the BYU Topolotron. Magnetic probe theory is reviewed as it applies to the BYU device, and the construction and calibration of the probe system is discussed. Using the assumption of axisymmetry in the toroidal geometry of the Topolotron, the appropriate equations for computing magnetic flux from the data are derived, and the computer codes written to process the data are explained. Data from a wide range of firing parameters are reviewed and analyzed. Cross-sectional maps of magnetic flux as well as plots of computed toroidal current density are presented for the various operating modes of the device.
