The 1975-77 commercial experience with passivation of contaminant metals on FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) catalysts by Phillips Petroleum Co.'s antimony-containing Phil-Ad CA additive at the company's Borger, Tex. refinery showed that the passivation improved gasoline and isobutane yields, thus increasing product value by $0.45/bbl of long residuum feed converted (at 73.5% conversion) at a catalyst treating cost of less than $0.04/bbl converted. The use of Phil-Ad CA also permitted increasing the throughput by 4000 bbl/day and the conversion by 3.9% when the FCC unit was limited by gas compression or air blower capacity and to charge heavier feedstocks, such as West Texas crude and its blends with Prudhoe Bay or Oriente crudes. Increasing the additive injection rate by 50% compensated for the additional metal-content in the heavier crudes and allowed a further 11% increase in oil feed rate at the same conversion, a 1.4% increase in gasoline yield, and 3.2 and 10.7% decreases in coke and hydrogen, respectively. No environmental, safety, or metallurgical problems were experienced when the additive was properly used. Tables, graphs, diagram, photographs, and 11 references.
