The high spin yrast structure of [sup 117]I has been studied with the [sup 27]Al+[sup 94]Mo reaction at 129 MeV. Three structural features have been identified: (i) coexisting prolate ([gamma]=0[degree]) and oblate ([gamma]=[minus]60[degree]) collective shapes involving the [pi][ital h][sub 11/2] orbital, (ii) noncollective oblate ([gamma]=+60[degree]) shapes associated with band termination, and (iii) a delayed [nu][ital h][sub 11/2] crossing frequency in the [pi][550]1/2[sup [minus]] yrast band.
