Magnetosheath whistler turbulence

Smith et al. (1967, 1969) reported the first observations of magnetosheath plasma waves propagating in the whistler mode. These whistlers are intense, narrowband tones with magnetic field fluctuation frequencies in the range from 100 to 300 Hz. The present paper presents the results of a statistical study of whistler turbulence in the magnetosheath. The principal data set for the study is based on measurements of the spectrum of magnetosheath magnetic field fluctuations in the frequency range from 20 to 1000 Hz. This frequency range includes the magnetosheath electron gyrofrequency and lies below the typical electron plasma frequencies, 30-40 kHz. Attention is given to data sampling, magnetosheath whistlers, upstream whistlers, the mean whistler spectrum, the frequency of occurrence, and the intensity distribution. 30 references.
