The discovery of superconductivity in ..beta..-(BEDT-TTF)/sub 2/I/sub 3/, where BEDT-ITF (or ET) is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrahydrofulvalene with T/sub S/ = 1.5-7.5 K, which is unsurpassed among the reported organic superconductors, has stimulated the search for new superconductors among ET complexes. Great interest is found in the preparation of ET salts with linear anions which are analogs of I/sub 3//sup -/ such as I/sub 2/Br/sup -/, IBr/sub 2//sup -/, ICl/sub 2//sup -/, Br/sub 3//sup -/, and MX/sub 2/ where M is a metal and X is a halide. ..beta..-(ET)/sub 2/I/sub 2/Br, ..cap alpha..- and ..beta..-(ET)/sub 2/IBr/sub 2/, and (ET)/sub 2/AuI/sub 2/ have now been synthesized and studied. They report the synthesis, structure, and properties of a new complex, ..beta..-(ET)/sub 2/ICl/sub 2/.
