Micromechanisms of fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness in metal-matrix composites. Technical report, 29 April 1986-31 July 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5797230
Fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness of seven combinations of aluminum-matrix alloys reinforced with particulate silicon carbide were measured. The matrix alloys used were of both the work-hardening and heat-treatable varieties. Two of the alloys were made by mechanical alloying - powder-metallurgy fabrication methods and the remainder were made by ingot metallurgy. Composites were tested in both as-received (extruded) and packaged conditions. Fractography was done for all the composites, as were cross sections to examine surface roughness.
