Book ·
OSTI ID:5795628

European countries have given increased emphasis to: (1) structural changes to achieve a more balanced energy mix and (2) diversifying sources of supply to reduce vulnerability. Discussed in this book are the steps taken by both Western and Eastern European countries to meet the above challenges and statements of their long-term energy goals. Addressed also is the role of the Soviet Union as a major supplier of natural gas and oil via the new Soviet gas pipeline and the increasing supplies from the North Sea provinces. Solutions to the energy challenges of the 1980's and beyond are presented. Discussion is presented under the headings: Energy's impact on developments in the 1980's; Energy endowment, trends, and options in the 1980's; Energy efficiency and conservation in Eastern and Western Europe; The Soviet Union as an increasingly important provider of energy supplies; and dependable energy supplies and security implications for Western Europe. Data on primary energy consumption by nation are presented in appendices. 57 refs., 14 figs., 31 tabs. (DMC)
