The risk of fire in power stations arising from the ignition of mineral turbine oil is ever present despite the use of protective devices. The hazard can be substantially reduced by the use of a fire-resistant lubricant and the paper describes the use of a triaryl phosphate fluid to lubricate a 10 MW back-pressure steam turbine and a 6 MW industrial gas turbine. After about 56,000 hours total use in the two machines, the fluid quality is still excellent. No fluid-related operational problems have been found and leaks which would have caused fires had mineral oil been used did not result in in ignition of the fluid.
