Near-threshold fatigue: an overview of the role of microstructure and environment

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5792708
An overview is presented of the salient micro-mechanisms, primarily involving crack closure, which can influence the growth of fatigue cracks at near-threshold levels. Examples are drawn from recent work on crack propagation in dual-phase and low alloys steels and in under/peak/overaged aluminium alloys. Factors such as duplex microstrucures, variations in slip mode, high pressure hydrogen environments and compression overloads are shown to modify changes in near-threshold crack growth behavior.
