The S/N properties of a metal or alloy are improved by cold working. This effect is a result of the increase of the flow stress due to an increase in dislocation density. It is pointed out, however, that in the case of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V cold work can have a deleterious effect on the fatigue properties. The present investigation is concerned with this phenomenon. Experiments were conducted with Ti-6Al-V alloy, which was obtained in sheet form in a thickness of 1.27 mm. The material was used in two conditions. In one case the material was tested in the as-received (mill-annealed) condition. In the other case the material was reduced in thickness by cold rolling to a total reduction of 20 percent. Specimens were prepared and fatigue tests were conducted. It was found that cold work of the two-phase alpha/beta Ti-6Al-4V alloy leads to a decrease in fatigue strength. 5 references.
