The feedwater for once-through boilers, the feedwater and boiler water of drum boilers, and the attemperation water must satisfy specific requirements for a smooth, save, and economic operation of steam generators and for supplying pure steam to the connected turbines and other systems. The paper deals with the VGB guidelines on feedwater, boiler water and steam of steam generators of pressure stages exceeding 68 bar and discusses the most important differences between these guidelines and the EPRI interim consensus guidelines on fossil plant cycle chemistry. Emphasis is on feedwater conditioning (especially on application of oxidants) and on boiler water treatment (in particular on alkalization with sodium hydroxide and on use of AVT).
