Period variation in the V444 Cygni system and mass loss by the Wolf--Rayet star

The period variability Khaliullin has discovered in the V444 Cyg system is confirmed by new observations. The variation cannot be attributed to the presence of a third component. The WN 5 star is losing mass at a rate M=-(1.11 +- 0.22) x 10/sup -5/ M/sub sun//yr. At the surface of the core (optical depth tau approx. = 1) the outflow velocity v/sub 0/=340 +- 160 km/sec.
