In order to reduce its dependence upon imported oil, Japan's energy policy includes the introduction and promotion of alternative energy sources and new energy technologies under the Sunshine Project. The liquefaction of brown coal from Australia is a joint effort in which Australia provides the coal, a pilot plant site, and staff employees to develop two-step liquefaction process, employ a new dewatering process for slurries, and to follow through with operation techniques and economic feasibility studies. Other projects will develop bituminous coal liquefaction using the NEDOL Process. The author outlines the pilot plant programs and goals and the participants in the joint ventures. 1 figure.
