PEGUS 12, the world's most eficient power station
- ABB Baden (CH)
- UNA, Utrecht (NL)
After a tight 24-month construction schedule, Unit Merwedekanaal No 12 of N.V. UNA, Utrecht became operational in January, 1989. This cogeneration plant comprises an ABB gas turbine Type 13E - the largest gas turbine currently in operation -, and an unfired three-pressure heat recovery steam generator which feeds a triple-casing reheat steam turbine and a three-stage district heating system. The cycle is designed for a net base load of 223.5 MW, with a thermal efficiency of 51.78% in straight condensing mode and in excess of 84% in the maximum extraction mode, when burning gas. The advanced technology developed and proven in 60 combined-cycle pants all over the world fully matches the client's requirements for a reliable source of heat and power. The comprehensive experience gained in all these plants has been incorporated into the design concept of Unit 12. The result is a sophisticated design employing state-of-the-art equipment implemented here for the first time anywhere, e.g., a reheat and flash system, gas preheating, feedwater cooled gas turbine rotor cooling air, etc. In addition, special car has been taken to conform with environmental requirements by using a multi-burning combustor to limit the NOx emission levels to max. 50 ppmv without steam or water injection (dry low NOx combustor).
