Coal Quality Information Book (Second Edition)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5789324
This book presents chemical and physical properties of selected utility coals from throughout North America for the electric utility industry to use when specifying and purchasing coals for steam generators. For each coal, ASTM analyses, such as proximate and ultimate analyses and ash fusibility and ash constituent analyses, convey the chemical characteristics important for coal combustion. For coals characterized at the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) near Homer City, Pennsylvania, additional data, such as size distribution and washability analyses, define the physical characteristics important for coal cleaning and handling. For many of the coals characterized at the CQDC, quantitative data are included for each raw coal cleaned to one or more quality levels using full-scale coal-cleaning circuitry. The book is divided into two volumes: coals from the Appalachian region are in Volume 1; and coals from the interior region, Gulf Coast region, and the western states and Canada are in Volume 2. The two volumes combined contain data for 66 raw coals and 80 clean coals produced from 31 of the raw coals. There are 59 bituminous and subbituminous ranked coals, three lignites, one anthracite culm (refuse), and three anthracite coals from 13 states and two Canadian provinces. The majority of the coals were characterized at the CQDC, but many coals were contributed by other public sources.
