The paper discusses: The benefits of forests as elements of the human environment. The interrelations between forests and forestry and the main features of the environment. The special problems associated with the conduct of research aimed at evaluating the effects of forestry on the environment. The conservation and management of animal resources and the role of research in resolving the conflicts between wildlife and other uses of the forest. The conservation of plant resources and the importance of conserving gene resources both of tree species and of associated vegetation species. The role of forests for recreation and landscape improvement and the difficult problems of defining public tastes and preferences and also of evaluating benefits and their distribution throughout society.
