Several laboratory and in situ studies have conducted to better understand the contributions of corrosion and wear to the wastage process. Hardness is an unreliable guide to performance under wet sliding conditions. Heat-treated alloy steels and cast irons are inferior to stainless steels (SS) in such circumstances. The surface roughness of SS gets smoother during corrosive wear testing, while alloy steels get rougher. This observation substantiated the reputation for improved slideability of stainless alloys over alloy steels.
