Search for events kinematically different from fission in the bombardment of /sup 238/U and /sup 197/Au nuclei by protons of energy 1 GeV

The measured spectra of angular correlations of fission fragments from /sup 238/U and /sup 197/Au nuclei are presented. Events in the region of small (120--60/sup 0/) separation angles between the detected decay products are found to amount to 4% of the total yield for the /sup 197/Au target. For the /sup 238/U target such events are not observed down to 0.5% of the total yield.
