Various governments have embarked upon some form of nuclear assessment. Many have publicly recognized that the nuclear question is extremely complicated, involving sensitive socioeconomic, political and even cultural costs and benefits in addition to the highly technical engineering problems, all of them marked by a troublesome level of uncertainty. Additionally, although every country has its own style of decision making, it was realized by many that a more publicly accountable dimension would have to be added to it to satisfy public opinion. In response, many countries embarked upon large, exhaustively detailed and very costly commissions of enquiry to analyze and assess all the benefits, risks and costs of the various energy options, atomic power in particular. This book presents discussions of these questions, drawing evidence from the situations prevailing in Sweden as compared with Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
