Mobil aims to enhance Western coals with new drying process

Possessed of huge reserves of low-sulfur, easily mined subbituminous coal, mine operators in the Powder River Basin have been looking for ways to reduce moisture content and thus boost the Btu value of such coal. The answer may be coal-drying plants such as the one developed for Mobil Coal Producing Inc. (MCPI), at its Caballo Rojo mine in Wyoming. This plant has successfully removed as much as two-thirds of the moisture content in the coal. MCPI hopes that such dried coal, with its higher Btu value and low sulfur content, will compete successfully for midwestern supplied markets with locally mined higher-sulfur coal.
