Monitoring hoist safety equipment
Mine hoists installed in the U.S. have to be equipped with all the mechanical and electrical safety devices required by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), but the federal agency does not require the safety devices to be monitored continuously to ensure that they are functioning properly. (MSHA, however, does require safety equipment to be tested periodically). In Britain, duplicate monitoring systems are mandatory on all drum and friction hoists. One monitoring system, which is used in over 350 National Coal Board mines, measures the depth and speed characteristics of a hoist and compares the data with a programmed speed envelope. Another electronic safety device double checks the automatic leveling mechanism by measuring the actual position of the cage and comparing it with the position indicated by the hoist sheave or drum. This enables the operator to detect rope slip on friction hoists and slack rope on drum hoists.
