This investigation was conducted to compare the reactivities of HO/sub 2//O/sub 2//sup -/, MnO/sub 2//sup +//MnOOH/sup + +/ and Mn/sup + + +/ -pyrophosphate toward some compounds of biological interest; in particular the NADH/NADPH cofactors. Results confirm earlier findings that HO/sub 2//O/sub 2//sup -/ form the relatively short lived transient complexes MnO/sub 2//sup +//MnOOH/sup + +/ in reactions with weakly complexed Mn/sup + +/. In presence of strong complexing ligands like pyrophosphate the observed endproducts are Mn(III) - complexes. Reactions of the Mn complexes and HO/sub 2//O/sub 2//sup -/ with some organic compounds were also studied.
