Economic evaluations of well-known processes for H/sub 2/ production have been made to compare with cost evaluation of systems using coal as basic raw material. Included are evaluations of steam-CH/sub 4/ reforming and partial oxidation of CH/sub 4/ systems to produce synthesis gas with subsequent upgrading to produce H/sub 2/. Partial oxidation of CH/sub 4/ to produce H/sub 2/ for NH/sub 3/ synthesis is particularly attractive, since part of the N/sub 2/ may be used to synthesize the product. Data derived from computer solution of reaction variables can be used to determine optimum values for a particular set of conditions.
