  1. George Mason Univ., Fairfax, VA (United States)
An introductory treatment is presented for the concepts and several key methodologies of good systems design, with a view to principles sufficiently general to find application in such varied fields as computing, powerplants, aircraft, and rail transportation systems. Emphasis is placed on the concept of system 'architecture', understood as the elements that are characteristic of a class of systems in view of their functions, performance range, cost, and other attributes. Attention is given to system requirements, interfaces, prototypes and simulators, system reliability and maintainability, and design for compatibility, expansion, safety, etc. Also noted are feasibility and tradeoff analyses, and the relationships between systems and subsystems. 70 refs.
