The criteria for the occurrence of density-wave oscillations (DWO) in boiling channels are reasonably well understood. Instabilities of this type may occur in boiling water nuclear reactors (BWRs) and currently impose operational limits on plant operation. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of nonlinear DWO phenomena. In particular, it is shown that chaotic oscillations may occur during natural circulation operation conditions. The analysis is based on a one-dimensional homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) of the two-phase flow in a boiling channel.
