A process is described for the conversion of synthesis gas to a product containing liquid hydrocarbons, which comprises contacting a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide with an alumina supported cobalt-ruthenium catalyst containing from about 5 to about 30 weight percent cobalt and having a molar ratio of cobalt to ruthenium greater than about 200:1 and up to about 3400:1 under synthesis conversion conditions. The catalyst is prepared by contacting alumina with a non-aqueous, organic impregnation solution of a cobalt salt and a ruthenium salt.
