Non-US nuclear energy commitments up 20% in a year; 52 countries list reactor programs in latest AIF survey

Nuclear energy, as a source of electricity, continues to gain throughout the world. The number of countries outside the US with announced nuclear energy programs rose from 46 to 52 in a little more than a year. Electrical MWe capacity of total plant commitments rose 20%, to 436,012 MWe (586 reactors); nuclear plant orders are up from 12 units (12,171 MWe) ordered in 1977, to 29 units (27,711 MWe) scheduled to be placed on the books in 1978. Data are tabulated on 586 commercial generating units, 151 operable reactors, 155 under construction, 45 on order, and 235 in some state of development, all outside the US. (MCW)
