Induction heated intercell fusion for lead/acid storage battery

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5777296
This patent describes a method of making an intercell connection in a storage battery with ''over-the-partion'' type riser construction, having vertical partition walls. The method consists of suspending a mold on the top of a partition wall with half of the mold on each side of the wall, projecting a pair of lead risers of intercell elements through the mold, one on each side of the mold, surrounding the mold and the upper end portion of the partition wall and the upper end portions of the lead risers with a coil. The coil is energized with sufficiently high frequency alternating electric current as to induct heat and melt the tops of the upper end portions of the lead risers to the top of the partition so as to bridge the lead risers over the partition and make an intercell connection. The melted portions are cooled to solidification, and finally separate the coil and mold from the risers and partition wall.
