Advantages of glazing insulation (in addition to thermal insulation) are discussed and major factors in the selection of window thermal insulation (appearance, effectiveness, ease of operation, cost, maintenance, durability, safety problems) are listed. Three types of window insulation are discussed in detail. These are: (1) exterior shades or shutters; (2) insulators between the glazings; and (3) interior shades and shutters. Methods by which heat is lost through glazing are reviewed as well as methods for identifying true insulating devices. Safety factors and product standards are treated briefly as well as cost factors. The ideal window insulation system is defined. (MJJ)
