Sol-gel processed materials in automotive exhaust reduction catalyst
- Ford Motor Co., Deaborn, MI (United States)
The sol-gel process offers the advantage of the preparation of high purity materials with a mesoporous pore distribution and high surface area. Such materials have the ideal properties for applications as catalyst supports. However, sol-gel processed materials have not found applications in automotive catalysts due to (1) cost considerations and (2) the loss of beneficial properties of the materials at elevated temperatures. Thus the materials can be used only in applications where temperatures are not extreme or the cost is offset by a reduced use of platinum group metals. In this article, we review work from our laboratories on the application of heterometallic alkoxides as sol-gel precursors which can be employed in several new specialty applications such as electrically heatable catalyst devices, lean burn NO{sub x} catalysts, and microcalorimeter sensors.
