Two-cycle internal combustion engine

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5774739

This patent describes an internal combustion engine. It comprises a cylinder; a piston slidably mounted in the cylinder; a cylinder head enclosing one end of the cylinder so as to define a combustion chamber within the cylinder between the piston and the cylinder head; fuel injection means for allowing fuel to enter the combustion chamber; intake means for allowing air to enter the combustion chamber; ignition means for igniting a mixture of the fuel and the air in the combustion chamber; at least one exhaust port for allowing burned exhaust gases to escape the combustion chamber; the intake means comprising: an aperture in the cylinder head: a valve, having an elongated stem, capable of opening and closing the aperture: an air pump forcing pressurized air into the cylinder through the aperture: a spring, exerting a force on the valve, in opposition to a force created by the air pump, the valve opening when the pressure in the pressurized air exerts a force on the value greater than a sum of forces exerted, on the valve, by the spring and a pressure in the cylinder due to motion of the piston.
