Excitation of Alfven waves by bouncing electron beams- an origin of nightside magnetic pulsations

Journal Article · · Geophys. Res. Lett.; (United States)
Electron beams produced in the night to dusk-side magnetosphere at geomagnetic substorm times are shown to be able to excite the kinetic Alfven wave, the Alfven wave with a perpendicular wavelength comparable to the ion gyroradius. This process can be an origin of dusk-side magnetic pulsations which are often observed by synchronous satellites.
