A two-photon trilevel echo has been observed for the first time in the 3D-3P-3S system in Na and has been used to measure the collisional cross-section of Ar with the Na in the 3D-3P superposition. Magnetic field induced and dc electric field induced SHG in the 3D-3S transition of Na is reported. The effect of the earth's magnetic field in SHG is revealed, and the strength of the applied magnetic field is used to estimate the strength of the dc electric field. The total scattering cross-section measurement of the 2P-2S transition of Li perturbed by rare gases is presented. The measurement clearly demonstrates the effect of velocity-changing collisions.
