We describe a covariant theory of pion-nucleus scattering. A parameter-free calculation of the first-order optical potential is performed. A second-order potential is introduced and the parameters of the second-order potential are determined by requiring that the resulting potential provides a fit to the elastic scattering data. The parameters of the second-order potential exhibit a marked resonance behavior. An approach to the theory of the pion-nucleus interaction based upon unitarity and analyticity is advocated.
