Mechanism of ultralow interfacial tensions in dilute surfactant-oil-brine systems

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5771382
Based on studies with well-characterized SHBS, AOT and SDS surfactants we can explain deep tension-concentration minima in dilute petroleum sulfonates. Ultralow tensions arise not from molecular adsorption at the oil-water interface, but from the surfactant forming a third, microstructured phase at the oil-water interfacial region.
