The Chaco Slope, a structural subprovince of New Mexico's San Juan Basin, is attracting exploration interest due to discovery of new Cretaceous Dakota sandstone oil. More than 1.5 million acres is under lease in the area, and a strong exploratory and development drilling program is under way in McKinley and Sandoval counties. As shown by the base map, the 2 principal Cretaceous Dakota sandstone oil discoveries made to date are: (1) Lone Pine-Dakota 3,000-ft field of E. McKinley County; and (2) an unnamed 7,000-ft field in Sandoval County, The new Cretaceous oil development is attractive because well potentials are high, success ratios are good, producing depths are shallow, and drilling is fast and easy. The reservoirs found to date by independent operators are relatively small, but several companies plan extensive drilling programs to further determine potential of the area.
