For use with a liquid system having a reservoir, a device is described for detecting when a liquid in the reservoir falls below a predetermined level which consists of: a housing defining a chamber; means for fluidly connecting the housing chamber to the reservoir; a plate having a port, the plate dividing the housing chamber into an upper elongated chamber and lower chamber; a piston slidably mounted in the upper chamber and movable between a first position in which the piston is adjacent the plate and a second position in which the piston is adjacent an end of the upper chamber spaced from the plate; means for urging the piston towards the first position; means for continuously cyclically urging the piston towards the second position, the cyclical urging means comprising a cyclical vacuum source continuously fluidly connected to the end of the upper chamber; means for indicating when the piston is at the second position; and means for closing the port when the liquid is at or above the predetermined level so that with the port closed, travel of the piston toward the second position creates a partial vacuum in the lower chamber which prevents the piston from reaching the second position and so that, when the liquid is below the predetermined level, the port remains open to prevent the formation of a partial vacuum in the lower chamber.
