Oil development and production in Indiana during 1968

In 1968, as in 1967, both drilling and production declined. Drilling, sustained above a 600-well level for 21 consecutive years, fell to 525 well completions; 725 wells were completed in 1967. Production, which had held above a 10-million bbl annual rate for 18 consecutive years, declined to 8,691,749 bbl--a decrease of 1,389,403 bbl from 1967. Oil attributed to secondary recovery amounted to 5,021,900 bbl, a decrease of 1,053,800 bbl from 6,075,700 bbl attributed to secondary recovery in 1967. Most of the oil reservoirs in SW. Indiana from which oil can be economically recovered by secondary recovery techniques have been, or are being, waterflooded. Thus, as the possibilities of establishing additional secondary oil reserves are limited, it is anticipated that the secondary oil production rate will continue to decline. Cumulative oil production to the end of 1968 was 406,863,681 bbl. Of this number, 88,955,600 bbl were attributed to secondary recovery. Drilling operations declined in all categories during the year.
