Process for the chemical modification of aluminum oxide supported rhodium catalysts and associated automotive catalysts

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5769995
This patent describes a process for chemically modifying an aluminum oxide support for a rhodium catalyst suitable for use as an automotive catalyst in controlling automotive exhaust emissions. It comprises removing hydroxyl groups from the aluminum oxide support by silation to substantially prevent the oxidative conversion of supported metallic rhodium Rh{sub x}{sup (0)} to Rh{sup (1)}; and effecting the silation by exposure of the aluminum oxide support to an alkylhalosilane in the gas phase at a temperature preferably equal to or greater than about 450K.
