The chemistry and catalysis of the water/toluene reaction 2. The role of support and kinetic analysis

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
The activity of rhodium supported on ..gamma..-alumina, Cab-O-Sil silica, and Carbolac carbon, of rhodium black, and of these catalysts physically mixed with ..gamma..-alumina was tested for the steam dealkylation of toluene to benzene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen and for the hydrodealkylation of toluene to benzene and methane. The rhodium/alumina catalyst had turnover numbers about two orders of magnitude higher than the other catalysts for steam dealkylation and alumina addition increased the reactvity of rhodium/silica but not of the other catalysts. The selectivity for benzene formation was approximately the same on all catalysts. The support did not influence the hydrodealkylation significantly. The kinetics were consistent with the assumption that water adsorbs on the alumina support and forms hydroxyl groups which react with toluene adsorbed on the metal according to a simple power rate law.
