Effect of impurities on the tearing mode in toroidal geometry

The role played by impurities in the tearing mode is analyzed. An impurity changes the interval of values of the parameter eta = dlnT/sub 0//dlnn/sub 0/ (T/sub 0/ and n/sub 0/ are the plasma temperature and density) in which the ''electron'' branch of the tearing mode is unstable. The kinetic contribution from passing bulk ions at eta = 0 drives the inertial branch of the tearing mode. The kinetic contribution of the passing impurity ions, in contrast, tends to stabilize this branch.
