The question of contemporaneity of changes of relative depth in Trenton Group carbonates in central Pennsylvania

In the Middle Ordovician, the first phase of the Taconic Orogeny downwarped central Pennsylvania as part of the Appalachian Foreland Basin, and volcanic ash falls (K-bentonites) and siliciclastic sediment were introduced to that basin from the Taconic Mountains to the east. Trenton Group limestones (Salona and Coburn Formations) in central Pennsylvania contain the record of an abrupt transition from peritidal to deeper shelf deposition. Three outcrops of these limestones were examined to determine whether the relatively deeper-water deposits contain a record of systematic smaller-scale depth changes and whether any depth changes occurred simultaneously across the region. K-bentonites in the sections permit detailed correlation over the region and provide instantaneous time markers to test any contemporaneity of depth changes. Three outcrops of Trenton Limestones were described and divided into lithofacies. Composite units were defined as lithofacies associations deposited at relatively consistent depth. These units demonstrated that the depth of deposition alternated between deeper (below storm wave base) and shallower (above storm wave base). K-bentonite correlation reveals that the changes in relative depth were not contemporaneous across the region, suggesting that the depth changes has a tectonic, not a eustatic, cause.
